Project Management Certificate

Teaching our students to successfully manage projects contributes to their personal skills related to innovation and experimentation. Students who complete the 26 credit project management certificate can apply all of the credits earned toward their B.A. degree.

MGT380 Project Management Essentials (3 credits)
This course will cover the nine knowledge areas in the area of project management; project integration management, scope management, time management, cost management, quality management, human resource management, communications management, risk management and procurement management, project cost and scheduling

MGT381 Project Cost and Scheduling (3 credits)
This course will cover three aspects of project management in detail: cost management, time management and scope management. Students will learn how to define the needs and requirements of a project, develop and implement a comprehensive project schedule, and estimate project costs. Managing changes to these three areas during the course of the project will also be covered.

MGT385 Quality Management (3 credits)
An in depth study of the theories and methods used to achieve quality in various types of organizations. Through exercises and case analysis, students will learn to apply quality control tools to problems and projects, and to implement continuous process improvement. The focus is on quality across a broad range of industries and services rather than simply from a manufacturing perspective.

HRM390 Human Resource Management (3 credits)
This course introduces students to a critical examination of theoretical and practical issues of human resource management and strengthens their decision-making skills in personnel cases.

MGT471 Management Theory and Practice (3 credits)
This course develops the diverse approaches and theories of management; traces the historical development of management; analyzes the technical functions of management; and explores the role of management in a changing social, economic and political environment.

HRM470 Employment Law (3 credits)
In this course students examine the legislation, administrative laws and judicial rulings which affect the human resources field.

MGT388 Contracting and Purchasing (3 credits)
This course covers the skills needed to acquire the goods and services necessary for successful projects, including contract law and administration, elements of supplier relationship management and purchasing.

MGT391 Risk Management (3 credits)
This course defines what risk is, how it can be identified, measured and transferred, the qualitative and quantitative methods available to analyze risk, and the significance of risk planning to the management of organizations and projects.

MGT393 Effective Negotiation (1 credit) – one day workshop
This course will help students outline the process for preparing for negotiation, list and discuss the various tactics used, describe the role of power in negotiation as well as state the role that ethics plays in negotiation.

MGT395 Effective Communication (1 credit) – one day workshop
Students taking this course will be able to outline the communication model, learn to listen actively, conduct effective meetings and assess the level of communication needed and be able to communicate at that level.
