Non-Degree Requirements

Prerequisites for Admission

To be considered for acceptance as a non-degree seeking graduate student into the ILPS program, the following qualifications are necessary:

•  A bachelor's degree from a regionally accredited U.S. institution of higher learning or its equivalent from an institution outside the U.S. as recognized by the American Association of Collegiate Registrars and Admissions Officers

•  The preparation, skills, and general competence that qualify the student to pursue his or her chosen coursework at a graduate level and to handle the demands of a non-residential course of study.

NOTE: Prospective students who wish to enroll but have not yet earned an undergraduate degree must contact the admissions office at 937-769-1818.

How to Apply

Non-degree seeking students must complete a shorter version of the application to enroll in each course.

Application Dates

The Admissions Office accepts applications to the ILPS non-degree learning program on a year-round basis. While students are admitted to the MA program two times a year: July and April, non-degree seeking students may start in the program at any time whenever their course of choice is offered. Applicants may indicate their preferred entry date on the application form.

Application Materials
  • A completed application form. Please respond to all relevant items on the form. Omission of information may result in delays as well as misinterpretation of circumstances.
  • An up-to-date resume [OPTIONAL] that details educational and professional experiences.
  • A one page statement describing your educational goals.
  • Transcripts confirming that a student has received an undergraduate degree. Non-degree seeking students may provide student copies of their transcripts. Should a student eventually wish to be considered degree seeking, official transcripts will be required.

If documents are in a language other than English, both the original document and a certified translation must be submitted.  This certified translation must be sent directly from the evaluation service that provides the translation.  For more information about foreign credential evaluation services, contact the Admissions Office at 1•937•769•1825.

(Note:  Once transcripts have been requested, it is usually three weeks before they arrive at Antioch. Applicants are urged to request transcripts as soon as possible after deciding to apply for admission.)

Enrollment

Accepted students receive a letter confirming their registration in the course, and an invoice.  Students will also receive a student ID card with their ID number. The number is important for registration and on-line use of library systems.

Non-degree seeking students in the ILPS program are enrolled on a quarterly basis for each individual course they register for. The typical time required to complete one course is ONE quarter.  A student may request an extension for an additional quarter to complete the coursework, if needed. An additional fee for technology and library services will be charged if an extension is requested.

Narrative Evaluation

Antioch University is committed to a narrative evaluation process for assessing student learning. Instead of providing letter grades, instructors are required to submit narrative evaluations of the student's performance.

The ILPS Department takes the evaluation process one step further, using it as an opportunity for students to reflect upon what they’ve learned, recognize and acknowledge the knowledge that they have gained, and identify how they could improve upon their learning. Thus, in the ILPS program, both students and instructors have the responsibility to reflect upon and evaluate student learning.

While letter-grade equivalents are not routinely given, Antioch acknowledges that some employers require this type of evaluation for tuition reimbursement.  Students who need this type of evaluation should contact the ILPS Program Office for appropriate forms and procedures.

Becoming a Degree Seeking Student

It is possible to apply a maximum of 20 credits of Antioch University McGregor non-degree graduate coursework towards a degree-seeking program in the Individualized Liberal and Professional Studies. For more information about this, please contact the ILPS Admissions Office:

QuoteI was so lucky to have found a program that sees the dignity of its students' commitments to family and career, as well as their educational goals. Designing my own master's was hard work, but well worth the effort. My experience at McGregor showed me how individualized learning is one of the best and most personal approaches to education. I am now prepared for the next step in my life, studying the history of women and religion at the doctoral level.Quote
