Biographical Information
Dr. Laura Lacy Rismiller has 5 years
of Ohio public school experience, teaching special education
for students with moderate to severe disabilities, grades
1 – 8,
in both urban and suburban school districts. Prior
to coming to Antioch University, Dr. Rismiller’s
collegiate experience includes supervision of student teachers,
teaching special education courses for preservice teachers,
and conducting research in urban schools with at-risk students
and their teachers. Dr. Rismiller has conducted workshops
on functional behavior assessments, including functional
analysis of problem behavior. Such workshops were
aimed at training teachers to determine the function of
disruptive behavior, as well as teaching students more
appropriate, replacement behaviors. Dr. Rismiller’s
research interests include urban education, school funding,
teacher praise, special education law, and teacher training
programs. In her spare time, Laura enjoys theater,
movies, talking politics (especially issues that affect
women and children) and spending time with her family.
