Biographical Information
Dr. Belay specializes in specializes in Identity and Intergroup Relations, Communication and Culture, International Communication and Negotiation, Intercultural Communication, Intercultural Conflict Management, and Cultural Studies. His most recent research focuses on the interface between globalization and cultural change. Specifically, his research addresses the shifting constructions of culture, identity, and conflict in the globalization process. He has published numerous articles and book chapters, including “Toward a Paradigm Shift for Intercultural and International Communication: New Research Directions,” (Communication Yearbook 16), “The Information Society,” (The Oxford Companion to Politics of the World), and “Ethics in International Interaction: Perspectives on Diplomacy and Negotiation,” (Ethics in International and Intercultural Communication).
Besides working as an international project consultant, Dr. Belay has an extensive academic experience. Over a 20-year career, he has taught and researched in several countries, including Germany, Kenya, and Russia. Before coming to Antioch, he was an assistant professor of communication at Rutgers University in New Jersey. He also taught at the Communication, Culture, and Technology Program of Georgetown University, Washington DC, where he continues to be affiliated as an adjunct professor. In 2006/2007, he served as faculty affiliate in the Interdisciplinary Scholars' Forum for the Study of Ethnopolitical Conflict at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia.
Dr. Belay has taught numerous graduate and undergraduate courses, including Identity and Intergroup Relations; Globalization Technology and Identity; International Communication and Information Transfer, Globalization and Organizational Culture; Intercultural Communication; Identity, Culture and Conflict; Globalization, Culture, and Identity.
Dr. Belay is winner of several honors and fellowships, including the Distinguished Fellows Award of Livingston College at Rutgers University and the Teaching Excellence Award from Southwest Ohio Council of Higher Education.
