Interests in My Field
I am interested in enhancing the integration of multicultural literature into all content area instruction. Teachers
need to move past the idea that the schools Multicultural
Fair and Black History Month are enough to educate students
about the world of diversity. I have seen too many teachers
who believe that they are introducing their students to
our diverse world if they read African-American literature
in the classroom. It just is not enough! Too many students
are missing out on the wonderful diversity that can be found
within
all genres available today—stories about
different regions within the United States and around the
world, stories that feature different family units, etc.
Special Interests
- Reading instruction, especially integration of multicultural literature,
- Social Studies – Middle Childhood Education,
- Brain-based learning, i.e, Howard Gardner’s Multiple Intelligences, Brain Gym,
- Partners in Learning, Community-based collaborative leadership techniques that can help develop an environment that interconnects faculty, classroom teachers, parents and students with accessible information and social services,
- Nation of Learners. A series of cassettes on addressing a new culture of learning within the public school classrooms.
