Through regular conversations, discussions, and consultations with classmates, professors, colleagues, paraprofessionals, etc., candidates will examine the nature of the reading process and how children come to be literate. Emphasis in the course will be on exploring motivation, issues of instruction and assessment for low-achieving readers; candidates will examine assessment and literacy plans designed to assist children experiencing on-going and/or profound difficulties in language arts, reading, and content area classrooms. The IRA standards are met through a series of scenario/simulation activities conducted in the university classroom and in which candidates are required to imagine themselves in the place of the classroom teachers. Candidates study instructional programs for reading and literacy development based upon the Ohio State Standards with benchmarks for language arts and reading.
