Benefits
The state of Ohio requires all gifted children to be identified in the areas of superior cognitive ability, specific academic ability, creative and visual and performing arts ability. Even though Ohio has a mandate for identifying gifted students from kindergarten through grade 12 there is little emphasis on serving gifted students. National Association of Gifted Children states that gifted learners should be served by professionals who have expertise in appropriate differentiated content and instructional methods as well as specialized preparation of gifted students.
According to No Child Left Behind (NCLB) legislation, schools must show an increase in achievement test scores in all subject areas of the curriculum. The gifted endorsement license will prepare teachers in differentiating the curriculum for all subjects thus having a positive effect in all achievement areas, including Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) for all students including high ability learners.
NCLB legislation also requires that all teachers be highly qualified in their teaching field. The gifted endorsement license meets these requirements. The gifted endorsement license is recognized by the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE) as an advanced program beyond the initial license area. Benefits may include the use the graduate hours earned in the gifted endorsement area as part of a professional development plan, for licensure renewal, and/ or pay increases.
