Springfield City Schools Wins Antioch’s 2003 Spelling Bee

YELLOW SPRINGS, Ohio, May 1, 2002—Antioch University McGregor’s 2003 Executive Spelling Bee, held on April 29 at the Loft Theatre in Dayton, turned out to be all the buzz with over 150 people in attendance and 20 teams competing. This was the second annual spelling bee fund-raiser that Antioch University McGregor has held for the business community, which raised over $20,000 to support a scholarship fund for lifelong learners. Several companies sponsored schools and other non-profits this year, which increased the level of competition in the game.

Of the 20 teams, Centerville City Schools (sponsored by StarBak Communications), Dayton Arts Team, Dayton Business Journal, Greater Dayton IT Alliance, and Springfield City Schools (sponsored by Martin, Browne, Hull and Harper) made it to the final round of competition. However, the Dayton Arts Team and Springfield City Schools were two remaining in the final moments and it was a hard fought battle with Springfield City Schools winning on the word “gangue.” The Springfield winning players were Nonda Harvey, Linda Paul, and Becky Scovill and the runner-ups included Rochelle Goldstein, WDPR, Sally Hahn, Dayton Public Schools, and John Saurine, The Muse Machine.

Other teams and supporters of the event included: The Antioch Company, Bing Design, B2B Team, Dayton Public Schools (sponsored by the Antioch University Trustees), The Entrepreneurs Center (sponsored by Reynolds and Reynolds), Fifth Third Bank, 40 Under 40 Alumni Team (sponsored by Antioch University McGregor Board of Visitors), Kettering Medical Center Network, Lorenz and Williams, Shook Corporation, Time Warner Cable, Tudor Day Spa, Vandalia Butler City School (sponsored by Elements IV Interiors), Vectren, and YWCA of Dayton (sponsored by Baldwin & Whitney).

For 150 years, Antioch has been a leader in higher education. Antioch University McGregor, one of five campus of Antioch University, contributes to the betterment of the individual and the community by fostering academic excellence and providing socially responsive, flexible, and innovative education programs for adult learners.
