Richard McGuigan, Ph.D., to Speak on Identity-based Conflict at Antioch University McGregor
YELLOW SPRINGS, OHIO –Traditional approaches to understanding identity-based conflict, human security and terrorism have proven inadequate in dealing with identity polarization. A more robust understanding of individual and group identity will be presented by Richard McGuigan, Ph.D. at Antioch University McGregor, 900 Dayton St. in Yellow Springs, on Wednesday, February 13th from 7 to 8 p.m. The event is free and open to the public.
The front page of any major newspaper on any given day is a sobering commentary on a world in conflict, on the intensity and complexity of humans at war with each other. The polarization between “us” and “them” shows up on all levels of our daily lives. In order to understand, and successfully resolve, identity-based conflict, we must first understand the complexity of the social construction of identity and its expression when in conflict with the other.
Dr. McGuigan is a conflict resolution practitioner, educator and researcher. He is president of Diamond Management Consulting Inc., in British Columbia, Canada, and has worked in the conflict resolution field since 1982, teaching, and facilitating. He has also contributed to public policy initiative at federal, provincial and municipal levels. Dr. McGuigan also teaches in Antioch University McGregor’s Master of Arts in Conflict Resolution program.
