Antioch University McGregor Receives Diversity Award

Yellow Springs, Ohio—Antioch University McGregor has been named a 2007 recipient of a Diversity Award from Minority Access, Inc. Representatives from Antioch University McGregor accepted the award on September 14, 2007 at the Eighth National Role Models Conference held at the Crystal Gateway Marriott in Arlington, Virginia.

Antioch University McGregor has been recognized as a degree-granting institution that has committed itself successfully to recruit, retain and advance students and personnel from a diverse pool, according to Minority Access.

“Given U.S. Census projections of demographic trends, any higher educational institution dependent on the general population to sustain enrollment and relevant staff or committed to strengthening the nation must diversify,” according to Andrea D. Mickle, President of Minority Access. Antioch University McGregor is among this distinguished group of institutions Minority Access has identified as being committed to diversity.”

Along with Antioch University McGregor, Minority Access recognized other higher education institutions that included: Columbia, Emory, Princeton, Brown, Ball State and California State University at Long Beach and San Bernardino, in addition to University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB), Nova Southeastern University and Oberlin College.

All recognized institutions provided their diversity master plans. Antioch University McGregor's plan stressed the learner's ability to demonstrate "integration of diverse perspectives" by showing the ability to understand:

  • How individual points of view evolve from particular life experiences
  • That plurality of perspectives enlarges one's knowledge and widens one's vision of the world
  • How to overcome prejudice, intolerance, and discrimination and serve as agents of inclusion and justice
  • The insights, creations, achievements and dilemmas of other peoples and cultures
  • How to dialogue equitably and respectfully on values and priorities in a multicultural environment.

Created out of a partnership between Minority Access, Inc. and the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, and supported by the National Institutes of Health, the National Roles Model Conference focuses attention on institutions and individuals who have excelled in their diversity efforts. Minority Access, Inc. is a non-profit educational organization that supports individuals, academic institutions, federal, state and local government agencies and various corporations to diversify campuses and work sites by improving the recruitment, retention and enhancement of minorities.

September is proving to be an exciting month for Antioch University McGregor. “With the completion of our new campus located at the intersection of Dayton-Yellow Springs Road and East Enon Road in Yellow Springs, fall classes will be held for the first time in our new facility. In addition to the opening of our new campus, we have now been honored with the distinguished Diversity Award from Minority Access, Inc. We are thrilled to be recognized for our diversity efforts and proud of our accomplishments. Antioch University McGregor’s nurturing environment contributes to the large number of matriculating minority students. Equally noteworthy, McGregor also serves as a significant employer for minorities”, according to Barbara Gellman-Danley, Antioch University McGregor President.

Antioch University McGregor was established in 1988. McGregor’s approach to education stems from Antioch University’s historical emphasis on intellectual, emotional and ethical development. The principles promoted by Douglas McGregor, president of Antioch College from 1948-1954, still guide Antioch University McGregor’s approach to lifelong learning. Douglas McGregor was well recognized for his teachings in participatory management and leadership as well as his belief that organizational effectiveness is dependent upon the cooperative efforts of the entire community.

Antioch University McGregor contributes to the betterment of the individual and the community by fostering academic excellence and providing socially responsive, flexible and innovative education programs for adult learners. McGregor features a wide array of bachelor’s degree completion programs, master’s programs in conflict resolution, management and education and also individualized liberal and professional studies programs. The new Antioch University McGregor campus provides state of the art learning facilities, creates economic development for the Village of Yellow Springs and the surrounding region as well as assures strong and continued growth for its parent organization, Antioch University.
